EL DORADO COUNTY, California (October 24, 2023) – Today the Placerville Police Department announced a much-needed boost in their mission to keep our roads safer. They’ve just been awarded a generous grant of $65,000 from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). Let’s dive right into the details.
This grant is not just a financial windfall. It’s a lifeline to improving road safety right here in Placerville. Police Chief Wren had this to say about the grant: “This funding will strengthen our commitment to public safety in our community. We will be able to increase our efforts in making our roads safer for everyone and focus on critical areas such as distracted driving, impaired driving, and speeding.”
What exactly does this grant entail, you may ask? Well, it’s not just about dollars and cents. This funding is going to be put to good use. Here’s a rundown of what the Placerville Police Department has in store:
- DUI Checkpoints and Patrols: They’ll be ramping up their efforts to stop suspected impaired drivers in their tracks.
- Distracted Driving Enforcement: High-visibility operations will target those violating California’s hands-free cell phone law.
- Protecting Bikers and Walkers: There will be enforcement operations to tackle dangerous driver behaviors that put pedestrians and cyclists at risk.
- Cracking Down on Violations: The grant will support operations focusing on the top violations that often lead to crashes, such as speeding, failure to yield, stop sign and red-light running, and improper turning or lane changes.
- Public Awareness: The department plans to engage with the community through presentations on various traffic safety issues, including distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, and bicycle and pedestrian safety.
- Officer Training: Let’s not forget about the men and women in uniform. This grant will also provide for their training and recertification, including the Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE), and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) programs.
So, the next time you’re cruising down the streets of Placerville, you can feel a bit safer knowing that these initiatives are in motion. The grant program is set to run until September 2024 and is made possible through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, with a little help from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
