(PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA) Sept 13, 2022 — Today Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) reacted to news that gas prices are expected to continue rising in California, even as they fall across the country:

“The Legislature had an opportunity to provide real relief to Californians by suspending the gas tax,” Kiley said. “Instead, the Supermajority opted to create a do-nothing Select Committee as an attempt at political cover. Now our residents are paying the price.”

In January, Kiley introduced AB 1638, an urgency measure that would have immediately suspended the gas tax and saved Californian’s over 50 cents per gallon at the pump. That bill was rejected in the Assembly on multiple occasions. Instead of providing relief, the Speaker of the Assembly created the Select Committee on Gasoline Supply and Pricing to study the issue. To date, the committee has held two hearings and has yet to produce anything actionable.

Now, experts are saying that we can expect to see an increase of as much as 50 cents per gallon in the cost of fuel over the next two weeks, even as gas prices go down in the rest of the United States. As of Monday, the national average was $3.71, while the California average was $5.40.
