(HAPPY VALLEY, CALIFORNIA) Aug 21, 2022 — First-hand Daily Recount of Fighting the CALDOR fire on his Ranch near Grizzly Flats by Retired South County Supervisor Ray Nutting.

Part 2, Aug 15, 2021.

“On this day last year, we just finished with Chase’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor and we were at home at the ranch thinking what was going on with the Caldor Fire. We were told the night before that the fire is deep in the canyon south of Caldor Road.

“My main concern was that the fire must be put out quickly because all modeling showed that if not stopped it could burned down Grizzly. All levels of government were at these table talk discussions over the years and the plan was to hit any fire hard and contain before it twisted out of control. At this time I thought the plan was being executed.

“However, on the 15th the public was left in the dark. Cal-Fire and United States Forest Service seemed not to be on the same page. From my prospective a lack of public information. Most people still felt somewhat safe.

“So I decided to take a ride in my car to see what was going on. I drove up Caldor Road about 5 miles and couldn’t see much of anything. A few planes and helicopters dropping water far down into the distant at or near the bottom of the canyon and again we were assured that the fire will be shortly contained.

“By this time I was becoming concerned. Caldor Road is a natural place to defend any fire coming up the canyon. I saw no activity to create a plan of action to defend the homes up land of the fire.

“I visited my sister that was at her home on the corner of Old Nail and Nutting Way in Grizzly. We both thought the fire was being put out and under control.

“That is what we were lead to believe when calling the fire department, Cal-Fire and the United States Forest Service. I went to my home at 4962 Edgewood Circle to talk with my renters about the fire. They were also assured the fire was being contained.

“This picture is my home on Edgewood Circle that I build. I did most of the work on the home with help from some family, friends and sub-contractors. This home was a four bedroom three bath home with a attached two car garage. 2157 square feet of custom work.

“The night of the 15th was quiet with only some concern.
