The El Dorado Union High School District (EDUHSD) honored Ms. Colleen Guglielmana at the April 27, 2022 Teacher of the Year Reception as Alternative Education’s Teacher of the Year as well as the District’s Teacher of the Year.

Ms. Jennifer Myers, Alternative Education Administrator, commented, “Colleen is a true champion of underserved, at risk students. She loves to fight for the underdog and sees the potential in everyone around her. Her empathy and genuine kindness are unparalleled. She advocates fiercely for students and for what is right. Often, parents share that Colleen is the reason their child graduated or reengaged in school or even that Colleen saved their child’s life.”

Ms. Guglielmana was quoted saying, “Knowledge is power. Education is power. Like the old African proverb says, ‘Until the lion learns how to write, the stories will always glorify the hunter.’ Our students deserve to know they can own their bodies, minds, emotions and education. Being a part of that process is the most noble and humbling experience on the planet.”

Ms. Myers concluded, “Colleen is highly intelligent, passionate and flexible. She puts the mental health needs of students first, validating and helping them through challenging times while always keeping the bigger picture at hand of teaching and learning. She is so deserving of this award, not only for her inspiring work at Independence High School, but also for the 18 years of teaching in our District. Thousands of students have been touched by her laughter, compassion and love of teaching.”
