(PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA) Oct 28, 2022 — Officers of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians (Tribe) Police Department were sworn in by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) as deputy special officers on Wednesday, Oct 26. The cross-deputization agreement, referred to as the Special Law Enforcement Commission, grants the Tribal Police the authority to enforce federal laws on Tribal lands. BIA Special Agent in Charge Christopher Lorenz administered the oath.

The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians is only the 22nd tribal police department in California to enter into one of these agreements.
California has 110 federally recognized tribes.

Chairwoman Regina Cuellar said, “This is an excellent exercise of tribal sovereignty, allowing us as a tribe to shed our reliance on the federal government to enforce federal laws on the Rancheria. Enhancing these law enforcement capabilities and placing them back into the hands of tribes is critically important to the health and safety of our community and surrounding neighbors. It is an honor for them to be sworn in as federal officers today.”

Many of the Tribe’s law enforcement partners attended the ceremony. El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson, El Dorado County Sheriff John Sheriff-Elect Jeff Leikauf, California Highway Patrol Lt Rick Hatfield, and Placerville Police Chief Joseph Wren were there to lend their support.
