Sierra-at-Tahoe Prepares to Reopen One Year After Devastating Caldor Fire

(PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA) Sept 2, 2022 — Exactly one year after the Caldor Fire tore through Sierra-at-Tahoe, the ski resort is making plans to reopen this winter. But as CBS reporter Laura Haefeli shows, getting skiers and snowboarders back on the mountain will be an uphill climb.

Exactly one year after the caldor fire tore through Sierra-At-Tahoe, the resort is making plans to reopen this winter. Getting skiers and snowboarders back down the mountain will be an uphill climb.

Reporter: one year ago, the caldor fire tore through tahoe, burning down the popular ski resort loved by locals.

We saw the mountain turn for this ashy-gray into this bright orange. We had to accept that the fire was coming into the mountains.

Reporter: The snow covering Sierra-At-Tahoe was replaced by charged chairlis replaced by charged chairlifts, ash covered trails, and birch trees.

It’s extremely hard. Not just employees, but season pass holders who have have grown up on this mountain.

Reporter: after one year of waiting, visitors can look forward to fresh powder once again.

We are really excited to welcome our guests back. We got to work the day we were allowed back one mountain. Quite literally, rising to the ashes.

Reporter: Sierra-At-Tahoe host said 1600 acres were burned. They are relying on federal funding and community donations to bring bring in the millions of dollars to remove more than 14,000 trees and fix the damage caused by the caldor fire.

We have all come together to bring the Sierra back to new.

Helicopter crews carried materials to the top of mountain. Trucks deliver equipment to fix the resort below.
