Save the Fairgrounds from Housing

(PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA) Aug 21, 2022 — Long read I know. It’s important! It WILL affect the El Dorado County Fairgrounds AND Raceway! (Biggest points I put in parentheses)

“In 2019 Governor Newsom created Executive Order N-06-19 which ordered all unused state property to be utilized for affordable/low income housing. The property that the fairgrounds deeded to the State for the construction of the Armory back in 1956 has been deemed “unusable” to the State.

There are currently plans to construct an 83-unit (1,2 & 3 bedroom) complex, with 96 parking spots. While every city in American could use more affordable housing, this is a poor choice for the location.

Because it is a State project, normal rules, guidelines and codes are not required to be followed. (The roads will not have to be improved. The corner of the complex is 300′ away from the Speedway track.

Armory Road is utilized as a one-way road during races, the fair, large events and fire camps. This complex will affect the fair’s ability to effectively host the previously mentioned events.)

(The worst part of this project is the potential tenants will likely complain about the dust and noise from events at the fairgrounds and the Speedway. That 1/4 mile track has been a popular attraction to our community for almost 60 years. The loss of the Speedway in itself would be devastating to the racing and OUR community. Without the Speedway, the Fairgrounds loses a large portion of its revenue and the way they do business now would change. Perhaps the grounds won’t be as accessible to the community as it is now.

This is a good project, just a lousy place.

Please join us in asking our City, County and State leaders to find a more suitable site for this project.”)
