CAMERON PARK, CA. (Kim McPherson, Food Bank of El Dorado County) — March 7, 2023
El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services, Lt. Troy Morton, was working on a plan to get some emergency food assistance to communities impacted by the recent snow and power outages in rural and remote El Dorado County.
Lt. Morton made a phone call to the Food Bank of El Dorado County to inquire about the possibility of doing an emergency distribution for our neighbors in Georgetown. The Food Bank acted quickly and helped the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services coordinate with the Unsung Heroes in Georgetown and The Library Hub in Placerville. As a result, there were two emergency food distributions.
On Thursday, March 2nd, two Food Bank vans were packed with 3,000lbs of emergency food. Despite roads being covered by snow and ice, they managed to reach their destination at the VFW in Georgetown by 10:00am. The Food Bank was met by several volunteers from the community, and together, they were able to unload the vans and prepare for immediate distribution.
On Friday, March 3rd, the Food Bank loaded up their mobile pantry and headed to El Dorado County Library in Placerville. By 10:00am, they were ready to serve residents impacted by snow storms and power outages. The event was covered by channel 10 and 13 news crews. The media spoke with some of the residents receiving assistance and the Food Bank Director, Mike Sproull. His statement was simple, “The Food Bank is here to collaborate with others to help those in need”. El Dorado County residents were so grateful for the help! Community collaboration at its finest, right here in El Dorado County. Together we make a difference.
