The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has announced the introduction of a new 837 area code to overlay the existing 530 area code region, starting on January 31, 2025. This change is necessary due to the high demand for new telephone numbers in the 530 area code region, which includes parts of northeastern California such as El Dorado County.
The overlay means that new telephone numbers in the region may be assigned the 837 area code, but existing numbers will not change. Both current and new customers will need to dial 1 + the area code and the phone number for all local calls, which is already required for customers in the 530 area code (CPUC) (The Plumas Sun).
Residents and businesses are advised to prepare for this change by updating their contact lists, printed materials, and equipment settings to recognize the new 837 area code. There will be no change in the cost or coverage area of calls (Local News Matters).
