EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. (October 31, 2023) – By Ted Gaines, Board of Equalization

United States – Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11th, is not just another date on the calendar. It’s a poignant reminder of the immense debt of gratitude we owe to the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting the freedom we cherish. As we approach this significant day, we reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans and active military personnel that allow us to savor the sweet taste of liberty every day.

For many, Veterans Day is not just an abstract concept. It’s a day to remember our heroes, our loved ones who have served, and our friends who continue to protect our great nation. One such tribute comes from an individual who holds a special place in their heart for a World War II veteran— their father.

A Grateful Nation

It’s no exaggeration to say that the freedom we enjoy today is a result of the sacrifices made by veterans and active military personnel. Their strength, courage, and unwavering dedication are the cornerstones of this great nation. Veterans Day stands as a unique opportunity to recognize and honor these remarkable individuals and their military families, who bear their own burdens and offer unwavering support.

BOE’s Commitment to Veterans

In a continued display of support and appreciation for our veterans, the Board of Equalization (BOE) is working hand in hand with County Assessors to raise awareness about two crucial programs—the Veterans’ Exemption and Disabled Veterans’ Exemption. These programs are designed to alleviate the property tax burden for veterans, their families, and caregivers.

While there is no general property tax exclusion for veterans, these laws provide vital reductions in property tax liability for those who qualify. If you’re a veteran or part of a veterans’ organization, the BOE’s Resources page can provide you with essential information to benefit from these exemptions.

A Salute to All Who Served

In closing, we want to extend a heartfelt salute to all those who have served or are currently serving in the military. Your sacrifices and unwavering commitment to our nation are the bedrock upon which our freedoms stand. On this Veterans Day, we offer our gratitude and wishes for God’s blessings to accompany you always.

As the nation comes together to honor its heroes, let us remember that every day is an opportunity to express our appreciation and support for veterans and active military personnel who have safeguarded the land of the free and the home of the brave.
