The Buckeye Union School District Board of Trustees in El Dorado County, California, recently held a meeting to discuss a proposed policy that would require school staff to notify parents if a student is transitioning or experimenting with their gender identity. The policy was suggested by Todd White, the chairman of the El Dorado County GOP, who urged the board to adopt a policy similar to one implemented by the Chino Valley Unified School District in Southern California. The Chino Valley policy has sparked a lawsuit by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who argues that it violates student privacy rights.

White claims that the vast majority of El Dorado County residents would support such a policy, and he sent the same letter to four other school districts in the county. However, opponents of the policy argue that it is unnecessary and politicizes an issue that should be left to parents and individual students. They say that it is a distraction from more important issues affecting students, such as the quality of education and well-being.

During the meeting, more than 60 parents and community members lined up to speak on both sides of the issue. Supporters of the policy argued that parents should be informed of any changes in their child’s gender identity or expression. They expressed concerns about girls’ safety in sports, restrooms, and locker rooms and advocated for parents’ involvement in all aspects of their children’s lives. However, no specific instances of girls feeling unsafe in these areas were identified by supporters of the policy.

Opponents of the policy, including retired teacher and long-time El Dorado County resident Frank Porter, argued that teachers and staff are already working with parents and that the issue should not be politicized. Porter believes that the proposal is a Republican Party distraction from real issues affecting students.

At the end of the meeting, the board directed staff to examine the legal implications of the policy and continue studying the issues. Superintendent David Roth emphasized that the district values communication between students and parents and encourages such communication. The board did not take a vote on the issue during the meeting.

The debate over parental notification policies regarding gender identity in schools is ongoing, as different districts in California and across the country navigate the challenges of protecting student privacy rights while balancing the involvement of parents. The outcome of this deliberation and potential implementation of the policy in the Buckeye Union School District remains uncertain.
