Youth Commissioners Benefitting Youth Mental Health and Wellness
(Dina Gentry, El Dorado County Office of Education)
PLACERVILLE, Calif. May 25, 2022 — El Dorado County Youth Commissioners recently presented on their efforts over the last school year that revolved around benefitting youth mental health and wellness. Commissioners took turns presenting to the Board of Supervisors, articulating how they worked to raise awareness, provide valuable resources like survey data regarding mental heath and partner with community organizations — such as El Dorado County Western Slope Boys and Girls Club — to expand their efforts.
Each school year students are appointed to the Youth Commission by the board to help develop and express the opinions, ideas and vision of El Dorado County youth by working with local government and community decision-makers. Through the program, students gain leadership skills and work toward common goals as they partner with other youth organizations, assist with local community service activities and discover ways to better communicate with youth about various opportunities available in El Dorado County. This is made possible through a strong partnership between the Board of Supervisors and the El Dorado County Office of Education.
“We are extremely proud of the Youth Commission and their dedication to serving community youth.” noted El Dorado County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ed Manansala. “In working together with our county Board of Supervisors to develop youth leadership opportunities such as these, we empower the next generation of El Dorado County residents to further cultivate a healthy and vibrant community.”
After the presentation, commissioners received certificates acknowledging their service to the community. Amy Pooley, commission advisor, also received a certificate for her steadfast efforts supporting this program and the students.
District 3 Supervisor Wendy Thomas, who also serves as the Youth Commission liaison, remarked, “It was truly a privilege to welcome the EDC Youth Commission to our board meeting to celebrate their accomplishments and to recognize Youth Advisor Amy Pooley for her inspired leadership. These kids are incredible and they give me great hope for our future.”
