Why I’m Running for Supervisor District V by Tamara Wallace

[Tamara Wallace, Candidate for District 5 Supervisor]

PLACERVILLE, Calif. (May 15, 2022) — More Unites Us Than Divides Us Year after year “we the people” of the County who live in Tahoe and other unincorporated areas like Pollock Pines have toiled hard at our jobs. We have built an economy and community that sends funds to the County seat. I have seen it firsthand because I have lived in both Pollock Pines and South Lake Tahoe. Year after year we have sent our tax dollars to the County in hopes of in return getting the services we need.

We need roads we can drive on year- round with snow plowing in the winter and less potholes in summer.

We expect fire protection and law enforcement and ambulance services that arrive in time to prevent tragedies.

We need reliable electricity and better broadband internet connections.

We expect mental health services and the same types of offices provided to Placerville.

It is getting harder and harder for the people who work here to live here. Many people work two jobs to be able to afford to pay the rent. It is a supply and demand issue. The City is doing their part to add affordable housing. El Dorado County is not matching that effort on this side of the mountain.

Year after year we have poured money into the County tax coffers only to get back maybe 20% of what we send to the County. Why has that happened? The reason is simple math. There are 5 County Supervisors. 4 live on the Western Slope and only 1 Supervisor is from the upper part representing Pollock Pines, Tahoma, Strawberry, Meyers and the City of South Lake Tahoe.

In fact, The City of South Lake Tahoe is the largest incorporated City in El Dorado County. Over the last two decades the situation has worsened. Here is how. We used to have as many as 5 District Attorneys in Tahoe prosecuting criminals. We now are down to 1 who can’t prosecute many crimes committed against our citizens due to lack of resources.

Our mental health services have also not been adequate which has been heart breaking to see. Our CPS case load is too much with children falling through the cracks. Our County Clerks office has gone from 3 employees serving our community 5 days a week to 1 person 1 day per week causing many to have to drive 60 miles to Placerville to receive the same services they get down there. Recently the resource drain has worsened. Our Juvenile Hall (built only 16 years ago] is being set to possibly be closed which will cause our parents of troubled kids to have to drive to Placerville over a sometimes-snowbound pass to keep contact with their children. Our former Supervisor Dave Solaro fought hard to get that facility built.

Now to add insult to injury a proposal was brought before the Supervisors to have Sexual Predators from all over the state be housed there right next to our middle school and Boys and Girls Club! I fought hard to stop that from happening and we did stop it. But it should not have ever been considered by anyone at any level.

The Meyers Community plan and issues need to be respected and represented. We need a Supervisor who is not only tough on those issues but also able to be able to convince 4 others to keep the rest of the County including the jewel of the Sierra in mind. We need the same fair services for all, especially those who are working hard for a very large portion of the tax dollars being sent. .

It is no wonder some are starting to want to form our own County. Still, I believe there is more that unites us than divides us. I am the person who can get it done. I can disagree without being disagreeable. Over the course of this campaign, I hope to explain my background and proven success in getting your government to listen and respond to you. I will answer your calls and return your e-mails and texts. Together we will work to get back the services you are already paying for.

I would greatly appreciate your vote, I would like to hear what is on your mind or have you ask me questions.

In order to judge what someone may do it is good to see what they have done. Below are a few of the things I’ve done and am doing.

Tamara Wallace Projects I’m involved in:

  • Clean Tahoe: this organization picks up litter and trash and large abandoned items to help keep our streets and forests clean and safe.
  • California Tahoe Conservancy: We purchase environmentally sensitive properties and help fund improvement projects including affordable housing.
  • Affordable Housing: We have approximately 500 new units in progress that will greatly ease the affordable housing crunch for our workforce and middle-class families.
  • Fire Safety: Personally, pushed for the re-opening of Station 2 and the hiring of 7 new fire personnel. Voted for a new fire engine. Making sure that City properties are cleared of fire fuels, especially around schools.
  • Approved the community shelter in place plan. I’m a member of the Ambulance service JPA, Joint Powers Authority that makes sure an ambulance comes soon when it’s needed. Flew to Washington D.C. to ask for funds for thinning our forests.
  • Police: Voted for new up to date communications system and body cameras for patrol officers. We also set up a community police oversight commission to help address any citizen concerns.
  • Roads: Voted for more funds, up to $6 million per year to go into repairing potholes and re-paving our streets. We added 7 new snow- plows and removal equipment
  • Recreation: Served on the committee to build a new community recreation complex that will serve all our citizen’s (city and County).
  • Budget: Made sure the City lives within our means just like you have to.
  • Business Owner: Wallace Business Services Former resident of Pollock Pines Member of Sierra Community Church and VBS worker Worked with Phoenix Food Pantry Proud Mother of 5 and we have 4 grandchildren, 3 dogs and 3 grand dogs.

  1. Proud to support an experienced leader who doesn’t have tunnel vision focusing on singular issues that only impact one area of the County. Your balanced perspective on a wide range of issues is an asset to South Lake Tahoe and the rest of the County.
