Photographer’s notebook: Revisiting the Caldor Fire (Slideshow)

(PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA) July 19, 2022 — I recently went to El Dorado County to view areas affected by last year’s Caldor Fire. The fire began Aug. 14, 2021, and was contained Oct. 21 of that year, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The fire started near the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River in the south part of El Dorado County. It burned 221,835 acres across El Dorado, Amador and Alpine counties, according to Cal Fire.

The fire cost an estimated $271 million to fight, according to the National Interagency Fire Center, and so far the Federal Emergency Management Agency has paid out $96 million in recovery costs, which mainly went toward debris removal and emergency protective measures.

David Scott Smith and Travis Shane Smith were arrested last year on suspicion of starting the Caldor Fire. They pleaded not guilty, and a pre-preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 22, the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office said last week. […]
