Lake Tahoe, California (November 12, 2023) – A tranquil swim in Serene Lakes near Lake Tahoe turned into a harrowing ordeal for Matt Leffers when he was unexpectedly attacked by a group of otters at an elevation of 6,910 feet. The vicious encounter left Leffers with approximately 40 bite wounds and a chilling tale of survival.

Leffers recounted the shocking incident to KCRA 3, describing how he felt an initial bite on his calf, followed by relentless attacks as he tried to swim away. “I felt something bite my calf,” he said. “There was the otter, popped up right in front of me, and then I was bit again.” The otters’ aggression persisted, leading Leffers to fear for his life during what he described as the “most terrifying experience” he had ever endured.

His wife, alert to the distress, came to his rescue on a paddleboard, pulling him from the water and rushing him to the hospital. The aftermath revealed the severity of the attack, with Leffers nursing around 40 bloody bite wounds.

Serene Lakes, situated approximately 15 miles northwest of Lake Tahoe in Placer County, has become a concerning hotspot for otter aggression. The Californian Department of Fish and Wildlife is launching an investigation into this alarming incident, marking the second otter attack in the same location this year.

Speculation surrounds the motive behind the otters’ aggressive behavior, with authorities suspecting a correlation to the abundance of fish in the local lakes. As the investigation unfolds, the community is left grappling with the unsettling reality that a seemingly serene swim can take a dangerous turn in the presence of these normally docile creatures.
