El Dorado County (Dec 20 2023) – In a heartwarming display of community solidarity, citizens joined forces to rescue three Sheriff’s Team of Active Retirees (S.T.A.R.) volunteers after a patrol vehicle was struck by a falling tree at the intersection of Grizzly Flat Rd and Sweeny Rd. on November 15, around 2 pm.
The patrol vehicle, occupied by three dedicated S.T.A.R. volunteers conducting security patrols, was crushed by the impact. Promptly responding to the crisis, local residents took immediate action to assist in the extraction of the volunteers.
Equipped with chain saws, an excavator, and pry bars, citizens worked tirelessly to cut the pine tree into manageable sections and clear it from the S.T.A.R. vehicle. Their quick and coordinated efforts undoubtedly played a crucial role in the successful rescue.
Two of the S.T.A.R. volunteers were soon released from the hospital the same night and they are now safely recovering at home. Unfortunately, the third volunteer, identified as Mr. Ron Case, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a rehabilitation facility. Despite the challenging circumstances, Mr. Case’s spirits remain high, and he is expected to return home soon to continue his rehabilitation.
In an inspiring show of resilience, Mr. Case, the most severely injured volunteer, expressed his eagerness to return to volunteering with the S.T.A.Rs and resume supporting the community. Grateful for the overwhelming support received, Mr. Case extended his appreciation to Buckaroo Leather for a thoughtful gift — a new hat to aid in his recovery.
The Sheriff’s Office issued a heartfelt “Thank you” to the entire community for their unwavering support, thoughts, prayers, and concerns for the three S.T.A.R. volunteers. The collective efforts of both the citizens and local businesses have undoubtedly made a significant impact on the recovery and well-being of these dedicated volunteers.
