El Dorado County (Dec 10 2023) – In the heart of El Dorado County, the Historical Museum is showcasing a captivating display meticulously curated by Mary Cory, the museum’s dedicated administrator. This exhibit unfurls a captivating chapter of the county’s past through a collection of vintage signature quilts, handcrafted by the skilled hands of the community’s women in the early 1900s.
The Signature Quilt (1935-1937): One of the quilts featured is the remarkable Signature Quilt, a labor of love spanning the years 1935 to 1937. Adorned with the embroidered names of 42 individuals, each name is a stitch in time, preserving the memory of women from Georgetown, Greenwood, and Garden Valley. This cherished textile treasure, originally in the possession of Georgia Gardner, found its way to the County Museum through a poignant journey. Gardner’s best friend received it upon her passing, and later, her daughter graciously donated it to the museum.
Signature quilts, a popular tradition of yesteryears, serve as a testament to the artistry and camaraderie of communities. Whether commemorating organizations, friendships, or families, these quilts encapsulate the shared history of a group.
