EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. (October 9, 2023) –  Several California law enforcement agencies announced increased patrols over the weekend following a devastating attack on Israeli civilians by the terror group Hamas.

Additional security measures were announced by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the police departments of Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Long Beach, and Santa Monica. Patrols will be stepped up around Jewish institutions, including schools and synagogues.

So far, Israel has confirmed the deaths of at least 900 people, including nine U.S. citizens, making this the deadliest attack in the country’s history. Another 100 people are still being held hostage by the group. A ground invasion of Hamas-controlled Gaza will soon be underway and is expected to result in catastrophic loss of civilian life.

The Los Angeles area is home to one of the largest Jewish populations in the world, second only to Israel. It also has a substantial Arab-American population.

Leaders across the region have condemned Hamas’ attacks and expressed solidarity with victims. You can read some of their reactions below.

“Hamas’ violent and deadly attack on Israel was nothing short of barbaric. I want the Jewish community to know I stand in solidarity with them and, in no uncertain terms, condemn this assault.”

—Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger

“I strongly condemn the attacks on Israel by Hamas, and stand in solidarity with the Israeli people at this painful and traumatic time. All responsible for this attack must be held to account. I pray for strength and safety in Israel.”

—Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath

“The violence inflicted on the people of Israel by Hamas is an atrocity. There is no justification for the loss of innocent lives. I stand with all condemning this assault on humanity and pray for all who are mourning and seeking safety.”

—Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell

“I join voices across the nation condemning this horrific attack on Israel. The Los Angeles region has the second largest Jewish population outside of Israel and many families are anxiously awaiting developments as they unfold. My thoughts are with those families this morning, and Angelenos stand with those under siege mourning loss. May their memories be a blessing.”

—Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass

“We are appalled by this act of terrorism by Hamas against the citizens and civilian communities in Israel. We call on President Biden and Congress to act swiftly in support of Israel. Additionally, we hope all peace-loving nations of the world and the United Nations, will condemn this senseless violence. Our hearts are with the people of Israel as we stand together and support Israel defending itself and condemn this heinous act.”

—Beverly Hills Mayor Julian Gold

“The attacks in Israel are acts of terror-the murder, torture, rape and kidnapping of civilian noncombatants. I pray for the lives that have been shattered and those in mourning. We are all Israelis today as we condemn Hamas & support the right of Israel to defend herself.”

—Los Angeles City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto
