Camino (Dec 11 2023) – Parents, teachers, and staff of Camino Union Elementary School District demand the resignation of Superintendent/Principal Brett Nelson during a tumultuous Nov. 28 school board meeting, where public comments extended over two hours.
Allegations against Nelson include inappropriate behavior and off-color comments, intensifying demands for his resignation. The Camino Faculty Association and California School Employees Association have both passed votes of no confidence in Nelson.
Nelson, the fourth leader in three years, stepped into the role at the beginning of the school year, following the unexpected resignation of Patricia Horn in 2022.
Tensions escalated when a recording from an Oct. 10 board meeting, inadvertently left running during closed session, revealed behind-closed-doors discussions, amplifying distrust among the community.
Former Board President Judy Morris resigned amidst the controversy, and upset parents and teachers formed the “Camino United for Students” social media group, sharing video testimonials and information on board misconduct.
Nelson’s attempt to address the situation was met with skepticism, with his wife facing backlash during the meeting. The board and Nelson apologized for the leaked recording, vowing to correct misinformation.
As the community grapples with internal strife, Nelson emphasizes his commitment to healing inherited issues, while the board seeks to address community concerns and move forward.

“Tuesday Night Board Meeting: all community members are needed!
Brett has shown he has ZERO intention of resigning so we need to keep pressure on our board to do the right thing and remove the superintendent.”
“Camino United for Students” on Facebook.
Todd White, El Dorado County GOP Chairman and a former board member at the El Dorado Union High School District for 8 years, brings the heat!
“There’s a culture here that is inappropriate… after I saw the video last week, you guys probably should have kept Patty Horn.”
“You really need to recruit candidates for the upcoming election for office.”
“Bob Van Gilder’s been here way too long. He needs to go… You have no right being on a school board. You are a disingenuous virtuous A-hole, that’s what you are.”
“This community is in control because you vote. We all know people here. We all know our friends and neighbors.”
