Austin Reininger, a student at Jackson Elementary School in El Dorado Hills, experienced a\u00a0first<\/em>\u00a0on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
For the first time, he played with his friends and classmates\u00a0on<\/em>\u00a0the playground at school. It\u2019s a milestone filled with meaning since Austin has a disability that requires him to use a wheelchair to move around. Most playgrounds aren\u2019t wheelchair friendly, but now his school\u2019s playground is.<\/p>\n
Jackson Elementary celebrated the grand opening of one of the region’s first playgrounds that\u2019s accessible to everyone \u2013 complete with a ceremonial ribbon cutting.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the past few years, our children in wheelchairs have sat on the sidewalk and watched the other children play because it was a bark-based playground,\u201d explained the school\u2019s principal Michele Williamson. \u201cWe have seven students in wheelchairs here at Jackson, so before, they would come down to the play structure, but really couldn\u2019t interact with the children.\u201d<\/p>\n
Williamson made it her mission to change that \u2013 enlisting help from the community to raise funds and get an “all-abilities playground” built at the school where she\u2019s served as principal for the past 23 years. She said she considers the playground\u2019s construction one of her proudest accomplishments.<\/p>\n
Rescue Union School District, El Dorado County Office of Education, the Jackson Elementary Parent Teacher Organization, the El Dorado Hills Community Services District, the Latrobe Foundation, and the nonprofit organization\u00a0Walk With Austin<\/a>, which was founded by Austin\u2019s parents, worked in collaboration to generate the over $600,000 needed to turn the idea of an all- abilities playground into a reality, the project supporters said.<\/p>\n
All in the design<\/strong><\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s foam-based,\u201d Williamson said when asked by KCRA 3 what makes the playground different from most school and park playgrounds. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have the bark, so wheelchairs can go right down the ramp.\u201d<\/p>\n
The ground\u2019s smooth surface along with the various pieces of play equipment make it accessible to all. There are tandem swings with bucket seats and safety harnesses, a specially- designed zip line and places to play that are no longer out of reach.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey can actually go up on the play structure in their wheelchairs,\u201d Williamson said. \u201cThere’s different activities they can do on the play structure and be a part of, with all the children together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Austin\u2019s parents, attending the ceremonial ribbon cutting at the school\u2019s new playground, discussed the importance of having a facility like this for Austin, his sister, and their other elementary school-age kids to enjoy.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone is having fun on this playground,\u201d said Holly Reininger, executive director for the\u00a0Walk With Austin<\/a>\u00a0organization, named in honor of her son. \u201cIt is not\u00a0specifically for<\/em>\u00a0kids with disabilities. It is to\u00a0include<\/em>\u00a0kids with disabilities and it\u2019s beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n
An inclusive space, the project’s supporters hope others will see and work to create in their communities.<\/p>\n
