The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors\u2019 decision to designate July American Christian Heritage Month, which (sic) sparked opposition from some residents…<\/p>\n
The proclamation, brought by District 1 Supervisor and Board Chairman John Hidahl, passed by a 4-1 vote on July 18.<\/p>\n
It \u201cis important to help inform and educate the public on our beginning and evolution of the United States of America,\u201d Hidahl said prior to the vote.<\/p>\n
\u201cCurrent education materials may or may not include the relativity (sic) of this history, but we should never forget our history.\u201d<\/p>\n
He clarified that the purpose of the proclamation is not to exclude other religions, and that the symbolic measure won\u2019t require any action by other county institutions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis great nation was founded not by religionists,\u201d he said, \u201cbut by Christians. Not on religions but on a foundation of Christian principles and values. It\u2019s clearly stating: don\u2019t forget our history.\u201d<\/p>\n
District 4 Supervisor Lori Parlin was the proclamation\u2019s sole dissenter.<\/p>\n

… \u201cAmerican Christian Heritage Month\u201d does not force a religion on people,\u201d DiBella said, much like other commemorative months (like Pride Month or Jewish-American Heritage Month) \u201cforce Americans to adhere to the respective communities\u2019 beliefs, doctrines, or customs.\u201d<\/p>\n
