May 24, 2022 &#8212; The State Water Resources Control Board\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcra.com\/article\/california-water-board-mandatory-water-restrictions-meeting\/40092154#\">voted Tuesday<\/a>\u00a0to adopt new emergency conservation regulations, beginning next month. The regulations require\u00a0urban water suppliers to implement \u201cLevel 2\u201d conservation measures under their\u00a0Water Storage Contingency Plans. They also prohibit turf irrigation at most\u00a0commercial, industrial, and institutional properties.<\/p>\n<p>The decision came one day after Gov. Gavin Newsom\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/news\/article\/Californians-could-see-mandatory-water-cuts-amid-17192918.php\">warned<\/a>\u00a0that statewide\u00a0water\u00a0restrictions could be coming if Californians don\u2019t start conserving more\u00a0water. Newsom urged residents to voluntarily cut\u00a0water\u00a0use in the spring. Instead,\u00a0water\u00a0use increased 19% in March compared to the same month in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>For six million people in Southern California, household water\u00a0restrictions\u00a0are already a coming reality. Those rules, which you can read about at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/%20https\/\/labusinessjournal.com\/featured\/prepping-for-the-dry-days-ahead\/\"><strong>Los Angeles Business Journal<\/strong><\/a>, will kick in on June 1.<\/p>\n<p>The Southern California region was already reeling from the\u00a0water\u00a0shortage when state regulators<a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/environment\/2022\/05\/california-desalination-plant-coastal-commission\/\">\u00a0rejected a large desalination project<\/a>\u00a0in Huntington Beach May 12.
