{"id":2635,"date":"2022-09-01T15:37:28","date_gmt":"2022-09-01T22:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.inedc.com\/22\/?p=2635"},"modified":"2022-09-02T15:46:33","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T22:46:33","slug":"guidebook-author-climber-that-lived-at-tahoe-charged-with-sexual-assault","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.inedc.com\/22\/09\/01\/guidebook-author-climber-that-lived-at-tahoe-charged-with-sexual-assault\/","title":{"rendered":"Guidebook Author\/Climber that Lived at Tahoe Charged With Sexual Assault"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>By Sam Anderson, Gear Junkie<\/pre>\n<p>(PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA) Sept 2, 2022 \u2014 On Tuesday, a federal court in the Eastern District of California released documents charging Charles Barrett, 38, with two counts of aggravated sexual abuse and one count of abusive sexual contact in Yosemite National Park.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities arrested Barrett on Monday at the Mono County Courthouse in Bridgeport, Calif., a public information officer for the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-08-31\/rock-climber-charles-barrett-arrested-sexual-assault-yosemite-national-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/strong>, and he\u2019s now in custody at the Fresno County Jail.<\/p>\n<p>The incidents that resulted in Barrett\u2019s charges all occurred \u201con or about\u201d Aug. 13-14, 2016,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-edca\/press-release\/file\/1529711\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to court documents<\/a><\/strong>. The indictment, previously sealed this Aug. 4, alleges that Barrett committed various forcible sexual acts against the victim, who it refers to only as \u201cK.G.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The documents go on to detail requirements that Barrett will forfeit any property or capital gains if he accrued them due to the alleged violations. He\u2019ll also turn over any property traceable to the alleged violations, or that he may have used to commit them, to authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Barrett previously helped author\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bishop-Bouldering-Charlie-Barrett\/dp\/B078XNQBRV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a guidebook to Bishop, Calif., bouldering<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0among several others for Yosemite and the eastern Sierra region. According to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tahoequarterly.com\/people\/haven-for-a-famous-rock-climber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tahoe Quarterly<\/a><\/strong>, he hails from Santa Rosa, Calif., and has lived in Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, and South Lake Tahoe.<\/p>\n<p>If convicted of his crimes as accused, he will face a maximum penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine, federal prosecutors\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-edca\/pr\/professional-rock-climber-arrested-yosemite-national-park-sexual-assaults?fbclid=IwAR3UWa9hfL7MypUXKz81auESpFnreGtpwf2TjuoeM2u2P5p9RcnGP1ALP-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a statement<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The National Park Service is investigating the case.
