EL DORADO HILLS (CBS13) \u2014 You won\u2019t hear 16-year-old Bassem Mansour gripe about getting out of his wheelchair. He\u2019s proud to show his progress and he has come a long way.<\/h4>\n
\u201cI just remember waking up in the ER not being able to feel or move anything below my chest,\u201d he said.<\/h4>\n
Bassem was riding his bike in October 2020 when a pickup truck sideswiped him and then dragged him 50 feet.<\/h4>\n
\u201cI was kind of laying there basically lifeless with just my head working,\u201d said Bassem.<\/h4>\n
It would take nine surgeries at UC Davis Medical Center, multiple skin grafts and extensive rehab to get him to where he is today\u2014a year and a half later.<\/h4>\n
\u201cBut watching every piece of it was very painful,\u201d said his dad, Yakout.<\/h4>\n
\u201cYou almost want to stop breathing because every breath you take takes you further in time and you don\u2019t know what it will be,\u201d said his mom, Silvie.<\/h4>\n
And it\u2019s not the first time UC Davis Health doctors saved his life.<\/h4>\n
The first time, Bassem was just six months old fighting stage four cancer. Right beside him was the same nurse who would help him through his accident 15 years later.<\/h4>\n
\u201cThey did save my life and they also saved my body. I wouldn\u2019t be able to be here if it wasn\u2019t for them,\u201d said Bassem.<\/h4>\n
Jana Poehling, now retired, recently got to see Bassem for the first time since the hospital.<\/h4>\n
\u201cThey are like family and they\u2019re so appreciative. Their words are way too kind, but it makes your job so worthwhile and it\u2019s something you\u2019ll never forget,\u201d said Poehling.<\/h4>\n
Bassem didn\u2019t forget either. He and his parents just started the Bassem Mansour Pediatric Trauma Therapy Fund, raising money for the Child Life and Creative Arts Therapy Program, the same program that helped him recover. He\u2019s not only back on a bike, he\u2019s skiing and mapping out what\u2019s next in life.<\/h4>\n
\u201cI look at him and his determination to do so and I can\u2019t be more proud,\u201d Yakout said.<\/h4>\n
\u201cEven though I\u2019m in a wheelchair and I don\u2019t have most of my mobility, I still feel it\u2019s a gift,\u201d said Bassem.<\/h4>\n
