Even the President is now finally recognizing this is the best way to provide relief to struggling families. Rather than launching a new \u2018investigation,\u2019 Governor Newsom and legislative leaders need to immediately suspend our state gas tax, which is almost 3 times higher than the federal tax.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A federal gas tax holiday would save drivers over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/20\/1106224199\/gas-tax-holiday-president-biden\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/20\/1106224199\/gas-tax-holiday-president-biden&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656138654192000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0Y4-Sz-J8DP6nSzbwG8y6u\">18 cents per gallon<\/a>\u00a0at the pump. If California suspended its gas tax as well, drivers would save an additional 51 cents for a total of nearly 70 cents per gallon in savings. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/budgetmodel.wharton.upenn.edu\/issues\/2022\/6\/15\/effects-of-a-state-gasoline-tax-holiday\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/budgetmodel.wharton.upenn.edu\/issues\/2022\/6\/15\/effects-of-a-state-gasoline-tax-holiday&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656138654192000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2_PctAgMhPJHFmL674i9HJ\">Penn Wharton Budget Model<\/a>\u00a0released last week shows \u201cevidence that recent suspensions of state gasoline taxes in three states were mostly passed onto consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This directly conflicts with claims made by Governor Newsom and California legislative leaders that suspending the gas tax would not lead to savings at the pump. Rather than taking meaningful action, today Assembly Democrats announced the creation of a Select Committee on Gasoline Supply and Pricing to \u201cinvestigate\u201d what can be done to bring down the price of gas. The first hearing will not convene for \u201ca number of weeks\u201d according to the announcement, meanwhile there is still no deal between the Governor and legislative leaders on the best way to provide relief in the state budget.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assemblyman Kiley introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220AB1638\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id%3D202120220AB1638&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656138654192000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3qNBjrrpJhTKnhDg-XwkBQ\">AB 1638<\/a>\u00a0in January, an urgency measure to suspend the gas tax and provide Californians with immediate relief. Since that time, the state\u2019s average price of gas has risen nearly $2 per gallon from $4.58 to nearly $6.40.
