We saw the mountain turn for this ashy-gray into this bright orange. We had to accept that the fire was coming into the mountains.

On Aug. 22, 2021, Grewal and Officer Kapri Herrera was traveling north on Highway 99 near Dillard Road at 4:35 a.m. to assist with the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County when their patrol vehicle was struck in a head-on DUI collision by a pick-up truck that had jumped over the center median.

I knew that if I left the ranch, the ranch would burn to the ground. Not one firefighter was in Happy Valley. There were dozens of law enforcement with sirens blaring.
I told my wife Jennifer that I knew what I was doing and I will be safe and ok. Fire on the ground we fight! Fire in the treetops we leave.
We both thought the fire was being put out and under control.
That is what we were lead to believe when calling the fire department, Cal-Fire and the United States Forest Service. I went to my home at 4962 Edgewood Circle to talk with my renters about the fire. They were also assured the fire was being contained.
A year later, some lessons are clear. What we do before wildfires ignite can make all the difference on the ground. Landscape-level fuel reduction done before the Caldor Fire played a critical role in protecting natural areas like the Caples Creek watershed while defensible space in the wildland urban interface was pivotal for mountain communities like Sly Park, Pollock Pines & South Lake Tahoe
