Farm-to-Fork's "Sample the Sierra Festival" at South Lake Tahoe
For the past four years, this Farm-to-Fork event has supported regional talent by showcasing only locally grown and cultivated food paired with wine, beer or spirits. Sample the Sierra is a one-day festival set in scenic South Lake Tahoe.
Sample the Sierra goes from 12pm to 5pm on August 31st with tastings ending at 4pm. Attendees will receive tickets to each tasting booth and will ultimately decide the "Best Tasting Experience," an award new to this year's event. Attendees will receive three additional tickets to vote for the booth they deem the tastiest. The booth with the most tickets will be awarded the inaugural "Best Tasting Experience" plaque. Another highlight to the day's festivities is the 3rd Annual Sierra Chefs Challenge. At 2pm on August 31st, four local chefs will face off against one another in a 45-minute cooking challenge that includes a mystery box of ingredients native to the region. The winner is awarded after judges determine scores based on each dish's presentation, creativity and taste. Newcomers Chef Stephen Moise of The Ridge Tahoe and Chef Jimi Nakamatsu of Kalani's will face off against competition returners, Chef Jeremy Acuna of Zephyr Cove Resort and past winner Chef Peter Brinckerhoff of Riva Grill.
As if the food and wine weren't enough, festival attendees will enjoy a slew of entertainment and shopping conveniently located within the Sample the Sierra festival grounds. Live music from James Cavern and Trey Stone, alpacas at a mini petting zoo, an unregulated corn hole tournament, and a vast festival marketplace will easily keep crowds busy.
Full Tasting Tickets include tickets to all 15 tasting booths and a commemorative wine glass for $40 per person. Under 21 Tickets are available and exclude alcohol for $30 per person. Children 3 years old and younger are admitted at no charge. .
Those looking for an inclusive experience are invited to participate in ancillary events planned throughout the holiday weekend. Festivities kick off on Friday, August 29th with a special Pop-Up Dinner featuring a meal prepared by renowned Chef Stephen Moise of The Ridge Tahoe. This special menu will include locally sourced ingredients and benefit Let It Grow!, a project from Sierra House Academy that will help build an all-season geodesic greenhouse designed specifically for alpine climates. The dinner will also feature the documentary "Elevate Tahoe," which centers on the challenges and innovations of farming at high altitudes. Events continue on Saturday, August 30th with a farm-to-fork bus tour through Apple Hill. Tour attendees will create a bottle of wine unique to their tastes at Madrona Vineyards with celebrated winemaker Paul Bush after sampling apple doughnuts at Rainbow Orchards. A SUP and Sip event with South Tahoe Standup Paddle and Boeger Winery will also take place on Saturday, as will a Paint and Sip event with Lake Tahoe Paint & Sip Studio.
