El Dorado County host Wildland Fire training
GREENWOOD — Corps members from California Conservation Corps Centers in Ukiah, Tahoe, Redding, Placer County, Inland Empire and San Diego attended fire training at the Wildland Fire Training and Conference Center in McClellan Park and the Greenwood Training Center in El Dorado County County.
The week-long training included classroom and field training such as the use of fire shelters, cutting a fire line, fuel reduction and containment. Corps members also practiced lifesaving skills during a simulated incident where a member was injured and needed to be carried off the fire line.
Though the training typically targets veterans, other corps members have the opportunity to attend. Fifty-nine corps members including 15 veterans graduated May 2 with the basic firefighting qualification known as Firefighter Type II. Veterans who are eligible for veterans’ preference may be picked up immediately to work on fire crews.
Corps members returned to their respective centers where they will be able to put their training to practical use throughout the year.
