SSGT. Sky Mote NC USMC Hwy 50 Sign moves forward, with some bumps
With the aid of many, including the office of Assemblyman Frank Bigelow, the over-crossing at Highway 50 at Ray Lawyer Drive, is officially named the SSGT. Sky Mote NC Memorial Over-crossing.
But an unexpectedly high cost of signage has caused a new mobilization to fund the expense. Veteran's activist Richard W. Buchanan has said that, "Our strategy should be to guarantee the outrageous amount of $6,114.33 dollars wanted by the State of California to make and install the route #50 sign honoring SSGT. Mote. And at the same time solicit donations from private donors, veterans, county and community groups to replenish the Community Foundations 'Welcome Home Fund.'"
The Executive Director of the El Dorado Community Foundation has committed the Fund to help with the "45 calendar day delivery - estimate/deposit = $5,095.28 (maximum cost = $6,114.33)" by accepting donations. Donations can be sent to: El Dorado Community Foundation, C/O Highway sign honoring SSGT. Sky Mote NC USMC, P.O. Box 1388 Placerville, Ca 95667.
But the sign cost is not the only issue being delt with as some express concern that only one of nine likewise honored soldiers are to be recognized by the sign.
James Cahill has written:
I am disappointed that this bridge naming is now going to cost a lot of money . . There are 9 Gold Star Families of this county who have also lost their sons to the 9-11 wars. The naming of the bridge after one of the KIA's is something that leaves me wondering about how these other families will feel as they drive under the Sky Mote bridge? I hope you can understand how I feel about this? My wife and I have talked about this issue from our perspective of having family members in the 9-11 wars and in harms way for over 13 years. You and I have also dealt with the Vietnam vets being forgotten over time. Remember the plaques on the sidewalks of downtown Placerville?
It seems to me the disconnected politicians and bureaucratic process seems to have forgotten about them as well? Tom McClintock made the same mistake when he pushed for the naming of Gold Star Peak and spoke at his ceremony. He too forgot to invite or mention the other Gold Star families to his event last summer in Tahoe. Their loss needs to be at least considered when the dedication ceremony is organized by who who ever puts this together. Finally, I would bet you that if Sky could add his voice to this he would want the other KIAs memory to be publicly preserved as well as his.
Although only SSGT. Sky Mote has been singled out for the honor of the over-crossing at Highway 50 at Ray Lawyer Drive being named after him, El Dorado County is well known for honoring and respecting all veterans, especially those that have given the ultimate sacrifice. If, and how, other solders with similar service records to Mote's will be recognized, is something that has yet to be determined. But there is no doubt that their service has not, and will not be forgotten.
