Accident in front of fire house too extreme for rescuers to save driver
Sgt. John Mueller of the California Highway Patrol said a man believed to be in his 20s or early 30s was driving a 1978 Dodge pickup southbound on Mount Aukum Road when it drifted onto the right shoulder. Mueller said the crash occurred almost in front a Pioneer Fire District station and was witnessed by a firefighter.
The crash occurred about 7:40 p.m. The driver overcorrected and the truck crossed over the northbound lanes, then struck a large tree.
Although the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was wearing a seat belt, Mueller noted that the 1978 pickup had only a lap belt, not a shoulder restraint.
The name of the driver has not been released pending notification of family. He is believed to be from the local area, based on items found at the scene, Mueller said.
After family notification the CHP released this:
Logan T. Durrett, 29, of River Pines, was driving his 1978 Dodge pickup truck westbound on Mount Aukum Road west of Somerset Drive around 7:35 p.m. He attempted to negotiate a bend in the roadway at high speed, and, “coupled with his aggressive steering input,” left the roadway. CHP investigators believe alcohol may have been a factor in the collision.
