Vote Count is Finalized - See Most Popular Offices & Candidates
The Fall election cycle clears up as the candidates for run-off are finalized and a new Special Election is announced. Many races were determined by Tuesday’s certified election count, but three races are yet to be determined and a fourth race was just announced to fill the vacated seat of Ray Nutting.
The announcement and election schedule for the Special Election for Supervisor District 2 seat is here: http://www.inedc.com/1-8928
Although voter turnout was abysmally low, some offices and candidates did better than others. Here is a list of the most popular offices for the last election (Popularity is determined by the number of eligible voters that voted for a candidate in the office.)
|42.90%||County Supervisor 4th District|
|35.53%||Judge of the Superior Court Office 1|
|34.95%||Judge of the Superior Court Office 5|
|30.81%||County Supervisor 5th District|
We see here that the most popular offices are those with contested races - they got more voter attention. The popular Sheriff only received 30% of the eligible votes, but the hotly contested Supervisor race for district 5 received nearly 43%.
All of the uncontested races received the least amount of response from voters. The increased campaign activity for contested races seems to be related to higher turnout and voting for that race. This is a good sign for the Republic that as the more contested races get more voter attention rather than voters being turned-off and avoiding voting.
The following chart is the popularity of each local candidate. In this case, popularity is determined by the number of eligible voters that voted for a candidate.
Here we see an inverse action on popularity of a candidate, versus the popularity of an office, when comparing Uncontested races with contested races. Using the Sheriff’s race as a benchmark we see that the uncontested Sheriff race received low response from voters but the popular Sheriff John D’Agostini was among the most popular candidates.
It is not clear if a race being uncontested is the result of the popularity of the incumbent, or if it is the race being uncontested leads to the perception that a candidate is more popular. Regardless, this chart shows which candidates won the highest, and lowest, support of voters. It also shows the total votes won by each candidates.
