Relive wagon train days without the death and disease
Folks in period clothing will travel along the dusty trail in covered wagons, buggies and as single riders as the Highway 50 Association celebrates its 65th annual Wagon Train from Zephyr Cove to Placerville, Calif., Saturday to June 8...
The current Highway 50 corridor known in the 1850s as the Roaring Road was the most crowded passageway through the Sierra Nevada. Not long after young men heeded the call to travel west to find their fortunes in the California Gold Rush, their families and others hoping to cash in on new business opportunities followed...
The festivities start off with a kickoff barbecue on Saturday in Nevada before crossing into California on Sunday arriving at Amacker Ranch. Mornings will be filled with smell of campfire coffee and slabs of sizzling bacon. Wranglers will secure wagon loads, tighten cinches and give advice to alleviate City Slicker saddle sore behinds.
The public is invited to the final weekend to enjoy cowboy grub, live entertainment and family activities. On June 6, a pancake breakfast, crafters and pony rides will be followed by evening performances from cowboy poet Jim King and The Stardust Cowboys band.
The End of the Trail party on Saturday June 7 in downtown Placerville, Calif., features a rib cookoff, live music, shootouts, kids games, mechanical bull riding and a visit by the Wells Fargo Stagecoach.
Participants can join for the entire trip or for a day or two. Daily rates start at $30 per day with additional fees for teamsters and passenger seats. All participants must register and sign waivers agreeing to Rules of the Road. Itinerary details can be found at http://www.hwy50wagontrain.com or 530-644-3761.
