El Dorado County Fair announces home wine winners
Five panels — consisting of three judges each — sampled 110 homemade wine entries on Saturday, May 3 at the El Dorado County Fair Homemade Wine Competition.
The Best Red Wine award went to team Holdenbein-Berg for its 2012 Syrah. Brian Fitzpatrick summed up the taste of best by saying, “It was unanimous. Blind and no discussion was necessary — a very handsome syrah.”
Best White Wine was awarded to Barbara Derrick for her 2013 Voigner-Chenin Blanc.
Gerald Cresci’s 2013 Sauvignon Blanc-Colombard won Best Sweet Wine.
Judges awarded five double golds. A double gold goes to a wine that receives a gold from each judge.
Double gold winners were Gar Harmon with his 2008 Bordeaux Blend; Holdenbein-Berg team with two double golds for the 2012 Zinfandel and 2012 Syrah; Heavy Toast, Arturo Mendoza for his 2013 Zinfandel; and Ken Pearson for his 2010 Zinfandel.
In addition to the awards above, eight gold ribbons were awarded along with 37 silver and 31 bronze ribbons.
