Napa High falls to Oak Ridge in 8-inning baseball playoff thriller
The Napa High baseball season came to an end Monday afternoon with a 6-5, eight-inning loss to host Oak Ridge in the first round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I playoffs in El Dorado Hills.
Oak Ridge took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double to right field. The Trojans added their third run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead over the Indians.
Napa answered back with two runs in the top of the sixth on RBI singles by Reed Oster (3 for 5, two RBIs, two run) and Alex Huntsinger (2 for 4, RBI). Sam Dearden (1 for 2) led off the top of the seventh with a double and scored on Reed Oster’s second RBI single of the day, tying the score at 3. Oster took second base on the attempted putout of Dearden at the plate. Jack Pridy (1 for 4, RBI) then singled up the middle, scoring Oster to give Napa its first lead, 4-3.
The Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score at 4. In the top of the eighth, Napa pinch hitter Ricky Cardoza (1 for 1, run) led off with a single up the middle and Danny Gonzalez was called upon to sacrifice bunt. Gonzalez executed the bunt, and the throw to first sailed over the defender’s head. Cardoza scored on the play, putting Napa back up 5-4. But the Indians’ offense stalled ending the eighth inning with the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Trojans scored two runs three consecutive singles, a sacrifice fly, and a walk-off single to left-center field that ended the hard-fought game...
