Mother Lode USD Participates in Kids Expo and School Bus Drivers Appreciation Day
On Saturday April 12th, Kids Expo hosted hundreds of excited children from all over El Dorado County. Mother Lode USD and the El Dorado County School Transportation Council were there to teach kids about how the school bus is the safest way to and from school. Nationwide, students are about 50 times more likely to arrive at school if they take the bus than if they drive themselves or ride with friends. Additionally, students are about 20 times more likely to arrive to school safely than being driven by a parent. (www.schoolbusfacts.com)
Tuesday April 22nd, 2014, is California School Bus Drivers’ Day officially recognizing all school bus drivers for their continued and excellent services to the youth of the State and El Dorado County. These drivers are deserving of special public recognition and the highest commendations. This day is promoted by the California Association of School Transportation Officials, a professional organization that promotes safe pupil transportation and advocates for continued high standards for California’s school bus drivers. We encourage parents, school employees, and school children to recognize their school bus driver as an important part of their everyday lives. If you happen to be driving near a school bus on April 22nd, 2014, give the driver a big wave, thank you, and remember to “STOP WHEN RED LIGHTS FLASH”.
The safety of our children rests in the hands of trained school bus drivers for hours each school day. Considerable time and energy are expended by school bus drivers in their initial training, maintaining a commercial drivers license, perfecting their driving skills, and accruing added knowledge of school bus laws through continuing education classes. School bus drivers, through counseling and disciplinary techniques, are sometimes asked to assist pupils in appropriate interactive peer and adult behavior. School bus drivers often face natural and unexpected hazards in the performance of their duties. School bus drivers exhibit patience and kindness toward pupils, parents, and school staff. They consistently demonstrate an awareness of, and direct attention to, the mechanical maintenance of their school bus and safety conditions of their school bus routes. School bus drivers perform their services for thousands and thousands of accident-free miles, year after year.
