Police Nab Placerville Murder Suspect after 22 Years On-The-Lam
The Placerville Police Department has located the suspect of a 22 year old homicide after the arrest of Jorge Luis Ponce Barajas, date of birth 11-15-73. He was arrested on a no bail arrest warrant in Richmond, CA. An arrest warrant had been issued for him in 1992 after the District Attorney’s Office filed charges against him. Richmond Police Department arrested Barajas on Thursday, March 20th, 2014 at 261 S. 13th Street, in Richmond, CA.
There has been an outstanding arrest warrant for Barajas since the original investigation in 1992. Barajas is wanted for the alleged murder of Inez Castaneda who was 23 years old at the time he was shot and killed in the 3000 Block of Airport Road in Placerville. Placerville Police Detectives suspected Barajas may have fled to Mexico just after the homicide.
Barajas had been sought in the homicide of Inez Martinez Castaneda of Placerville, who was killed Sept. 30, 1992, at 3029 Airport Road in Placerville following a fight with two men over a vehicle, according to a Sacramento Bee story at the time. Castaneda, 23 years old when she was killed, was shot in the chest. The men, identified by a witness, fled in a gray Ford Mustang. [via contemporaneous Sac Bee story]
Older cases such as these present inherent challenges. That said, I trust justice will prevail, albeit 22 years after this tragic incident occurred,” said Chief Scott Heller, “We will be working closely with the District Attorney’s Office to achieve a successful prosecution in this case."
Barajas is in custody at the El Dorado County Jail being held on the warrant without bail. Anyone having further information on this case is encouraged to contact Det. Ron Cannon at (530)642-5210.
