Great Ski Race in Tahoe Canceled due to Lack of Snow
The Sierra snowpack is well below even half of normal for this time of year. The event draws as many as 1,000 participants and is the main fundraiser for the search and rescue team.
Race officials had this to say:
Thank you to everyone who participated in our poll and to those of you who were willing to commit to a different course. A special thanks to those who responded to our outreach by providing us with donations.
Royal Gorge and Sugar Bowl deserve a BIG round of applause for working with us on race plans for this year. We also appreciate the help of Tahoe XC, the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association, and the community’s collective efforts to try make The Great Ski Race® happen in 2014. The ongoing tradition of The Great Ski Race® is only possible because of the generosity of our sponsors – check them out on The Great Ski Race® sponsors page; please keep our sponsors in mind and give them your business.
Your feedback was very much appreciated . . . we got many positive e-mails from skiers, including a number of votes objecting to labeling any course other than the customary Tahoe to Truckee route “THE Great Ski Race®” . . . yes, we get it! We are very much aware that the usual course from Tahoe to Truckee is truly epic, and deeply rooted in tradition – rest assured, it’s a tradition that we fully intend to preserve.
The Great Ski Race® is the key fundraising event for the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue (TNSAR) -- and it’s currently the only fundraising event that we do each year. Race fees and donations fund TNSAR’s operations, and our all-volunteer search and rescue team operates 24/7, year-round. To learn more about TNSAR, visit our website.
Thank you again for your support and understanding and we’ll stay in touch with breaking news, key events, and of course plans for next year's race.
We look forward to seeing you at The Great Ski Race® 2015!
