The Winkler children, left without parents at home after their mother was killed and their father jailed in her death, will remain with their grandfather in Napa.A two-hour mediation session today in El Dorado Superior Court ended with a resolution that makes Don Hatfield guardian of Eva, 5, Ariel, 3, and baby Alex Winkler.
Their 37-year-old mother, Rachel Winkler, was stabbed to death in February in the family's Cameron Park home. Her husband, Todd, 45, is charged with murder in the case. He has pleaded not guilty, maintaining he killed his wife in self-defense after she came at him with a pair of scissors.
Hatfield, who turned 65 today, has cared for the children since his daughter died.
