Opinion: In Appreciation of Congressman McClintock
Mr. John Garon contended in his LTE in the Mountain Democrat on January 20th that Congressman McClintock is not doing his job because he is not bringing home the bacon, otherwise known as Federal Government Grants, “Pork” or “Earmarks.”
Taking money from taxpayers in other states for a local project is a losing proposition. Who are the omniscient people in Washington that can determine the merits or lack thereof of local projects across the country? How much “slippage” is there as the money moves through the Federal Government? Money from the Federal Government is not free. I certainly don’t want to pay for local projects in other states based on their politician’s idea of a good project.
While many voters support spending limits on political campaigns, it should be recognized that incumbents have the benefit of unaccountable Federal Government Grants for local projects.
This “free” money can be showered on their low information constituents to show that they are delivering the Pork and get re-elected.
Congressman McClintock consistently resists these earmarks. It would be disingenuous of him to lobby for Federal Grants that he finds reprehensible in principle. He is delivering on the promises he has made to his constituents by doing the fiscally responsible thing. I, and other fiscally responsible voters will continue to support him.
