El Dorado County board spurns proposal for an excursion train

El Dorado County supervisors rejected a compromise plan Tuesday to run an excursion train on existing rail lines west of Shingle Springs.

Supervisor Ray Nutting called himself a "pro-train guy" and board Chairman John Knight called the plan "a reasonable compromise," but both joined Supervisor Ron Briggs in rejecting the plan.

However, a majority of supervisors voted repeatedly to make recreation trails for hikers and bikers a priority for the rail corridor.

Exeursion Train - hiking trail

There is room for everyone. Why should one El Dorado County Tourism asset, one that serves those who perhaps don't ride horses, bicycles, hike, etc., who enjoy seeing the countryside,however, be exempted? There is ample room to accomodate both, and a selfish refusal to share is what we try to educate OUT of our children... Let's all grow up and work together for the benefit an denjoyment of ALL.

Leave the rails! Many people are not physically able to enjoy this county. When the forest roads were shut down to motorized vehicles, everybody pointed out that a large portion of the public would not have access. Where is that outcry now. My vote for supervisor will be based on the rails outcome. The right of way for the rail line is wide enough for both. Why does this county have to always be either/or why not both. Stop taking away what is special about this county. Is anybody listening?
