-- Hangtown Biography --
It’s the fall of 1849 and the California Gold Rush is in full swing. Thousands of folk have travelled thousand of miles, leaving their families and homes, to claim their share of the prize.
Many a ramshackle town has appeared overnight to meet the needs of these visitors, and with their shaky little governments, these dark, dank, lawless hell-holes are a haven for the undesirables - one such place is Hangtown.
Now, there’s two types of people fighting to make it rich here; the first, the panic diggers from afar, are who we call the ‘49ers’. They’re plain broke on arrival and what they have left is spent buying overpriced tools. They work real hard, trudging through the mud of the cold hills, living in the hope of the tales they’ve heard, and if they’re lucky enough to survive, and if they’re even luckier still and actually find themselves one of them sacred rocks, well, there’s a whole town of debauchery readily singing its sweet song into their ear, which brings us to the second type of person.
Spendin’ their whole day sittin’ back, eatin’, drinkin’, sleepin’, gamblin’, and cavortin’, these dogs are merely layin’ in wait for the return of the first folks, so they can kindly help relieve them of their precious trophies – nothing more than liars, cheats and cowards, these ‘people’ are known as The Hangtown Thieves.
We are The Hangtown Thieves, there’s seven of us and we play country-blues music with a pop edge. Having a passion for the styles and the history of pasteras, we take inspiration from these times when writing and recording our music.
Chris Buckley, one of the organisers, said: “We are aiming to make Buxton Rocks a great event for local people, as well as attracting visitors from outside the area.
“The tribute bands are an attraction to gain an audience, but we really want to focus on the outstanding and forming musical talents that Derbyshire has on offer.”
He added: “We want to make the event grow and add extra venues over the coming year to make it a highlight on the local calender along with the many other excellent local events Buxton has to offer.”
Buxton Rocks will also feature market stalls, and stands selling food and refreshments.
Admission is £10. Tickets are available in Buxton from Divine Trash, Muzik and More, the Tradesman’s Cafe and Buxton Tourist Information Centre in the Pavilion Gardens. Alternatively, call 07581 416771.
