El Dorado Hills home fire prompts recall of defunct company’s solar tiles
EL DORADO HILLS, CA - An El Dorado Hills home fire has prompted fire officials and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to alert owners of homes with solar roof tiles manufactured by Applied Solar Inc. to turn off and stop using the systems until they are repaired or replaced. Applied Solar went out of business in 2009.
Three fires have been reported.
The tiles, integrated into the roof, are SolarSave OE-34 Solar Panel photovoltaic roof tiles, the kind installed on newly built Blackstone homes in Alta Mira Village on Latrobe Road, across from the El Dorado Hills Business Park.
A year ago, Suntech America Inc. of San Francisco, another solar system distributor launched a recall of its SolarBlend Roof Tiles because of their potential fire hazard. The tiles were made by Wuxi Suntech Power Co. in China.
About 250 homes are believed to have SolarSave roof tiles in Blackstone in El Dorado Hills and about 300 SolarBlend installations have been made throughout the U.S. One fire has been reported involving SolarBlend tiles.
