Facebook campaign seeks felony charge in Reno dead puppy case
Gina Greisen of Nevada Voters for Animals has posted to Facebook a photo and report about a puppy found freezing and starved in Reno. She is seeking a felony charge under Cooney's Law, which was passed by the Legislature in 2011 and aimed at increasing the penalty for malicious animal cruelty.
Greisen tells Mostly Dogs that she can name off the top of her head a half-dozen animal cruelty cases charged under Cooney's Law in Las Vegas but that there appear to have been zero in Washoe County. She thinks cruelty cases are being undercharged here.
Below is the content of her Facebook post with her call for people to contact authorities seeking a felony charge in the death of the pitbull puppy, which she says was found clinging to life in an alley behind a Reno motel and had to be euthanized. At the very bottom is a photo of the puppy so don't scroll down all the way unless you want to see the poor dog.
HEARTBREAKING: DEAD PUPPY IN RENO, NV. Let's get Justice for Puppy Doe! She was abandoned in that carrier Starved & Freezing and left to die. We are calling for FELONY charges under Cooney's Law in this case. Please contact Washoe County Animal Services (WCAS) at (775) 322-3647 and ask them to please investigate this case as a Felony. Reference Activity #: A 13-102198.
We were tipped off to this photo on fb after sharing a post last night regarding a Northern NV cruelty case. (NOTE: we did not share this photo from the page of the concerned party who originally posted the picture in order to protect their privacy and we ask others with knowledge of this photo to do the same, unless that party chooses to come forward.)
According to the post on fb, this puppy was suffering badly and it had to be euthanized. We believe the picture depicts exactly how the puppy was left by the owner. We also understand from a WCAS Lead AC Officer that they are actively investigating this case but cannot provide many details because it's an open investigation. We appreciate that we were provided with the activity # for folks to reference. We've had some concerns that we're not aware of any cases prosecuted under Cooney's law in Washoe County since the law went into effect, so we plan to follow this case closely and ensure the law is being appropriately applied in felony cases. (more on that, later)
We are withholding some info we've learned so we don't jeopardize the investigation. Let's pray they find the responsible party and bring them to swift justice.
We are grateful for the tip. We wish we'd known about this case a little sooner. Please let your friends, family and co-workers know about our organization so folks in NV know we are here, we FIGHT for animals, and we can help. Thank you.
IF ANYONE HAS INFORMATION ABOUT THIS CASE OR ANY OTHER CRUELTY CASE, PLEASE CONTACT US IMMEDIATELY via fb message or email Gina@Cooneyslaw.com SO WE CAN ENSURE PROPER INVESTIGATION & PROSECUTION.
We fought hard for this law and we want to make sure it's enforced.
