Guide dog puppy gets ready to do a big job
The El Dorado Second Sight Paws for the Blind Puppy Raising Club welcomed a puppy from Guide Dogs for the Blind (www.guidedogs.com). Her name is Butter and she is a Labrador retriever. She will become the partner for someone who is blind.
The puppy is being raised by Angela Wu and family of El Dorado Hills who was surprised by her Puppy Club, El Dorado Second Sight with an at home deliver of Butter. Several club members traveled to the Guide Dogs for the Blind campus in San Rafael to bring Butter back to El Dorado County.
Wu first became interested in puppy raising while looking for a volunteer project for her family.
She has raised puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind for a while.
“Puppy raising is a very rewarding experience,” said Wu.
“Butter is a very happy puppy,” she added.
There are 14 current puppies and more than 60 members in the El Dorado Second Sight Paws for the Blind Puppy Raising Club.
There are two ways the raisers receive their puppies. The puppies are loaded into the puppy truck at the organization’s headquarters in San Rafael and are delivered to their raiser, or the raiser can go to the Guide Dogs for the Blind campus in San Rafael to pick up the puppy.
The raisers welcome the puppy into their homes for 14-18 months where they teach the dogs to have excellent house manners and socialize the dogs to the outside world by introducing them to new people, places and experiences.
Raisers then return their dogs to Guide Dogs for the Blind for several months of formal training. The dogs are then matched with blind students enrolled in the in-residence training.
The final step is when the raisers are invited to formally present the dog they have raised to its new partner in a public graduation ceremony.
Guide Dogs for the Blind has been creating life-long partnerships to people throughout the United States and Canada since 1942. Services are provided free-of-charge. The organization receives no government funding but relies solely on private donations.
