UM Athletic Director Dave Johnson Announces Forced Retirement
As the former athletic director at Union Mine High School, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people and businesses in the Placerville area for their support of Union Mine High athletics from 1999 to the present.
As someone who was there when UM was just a concept on the drawing board, until now when we are a state-of-the-art high school with outstanding athletic facilities, I have seen a great work in progress. I have been privileged to work with many outstanding coaches and athletes, and have seen our community come together in support of our school during both good and hard times.
As the former athletic director I look back with pride and amazement at what Union Mine accomplished in the first decade of its existence. The success is due to our hard working coaches, the many outstanding athletes, and very supportive families who make up the Union Mine community. We were the “new kids on the block” that came out of nowhere and burst on the athletic scene.
While the last few years have been difficult with declining enrollment, Union Mine has still managed to represent itself admirably. The year 2011 saw Union Mine win the state championship in girls volleyball. Our golf teams have won several league championships. The snowboard team won a state championship recently. Softball won the league championship last year and returns a stellar group this season. The list of league titles goes on and on in all sports at one time or another. None of this would be possible without extremely hard working coaches, players, and a supportive community.
While it was not my intention to leave this post, my hope is to see Union Mine continue to get better as the years go on. While the excitement of installing the lights on the field, building the snack bar, visitors bleachers, and starting an athletic program from the ground up, are only fond memories shared with those who were there, I hope the future is bright for the people who know what “the Union Mine Way” means.
