Winter Solstice festivities in Placerville
Winter Solstice--also known as Alban Arthan--the light of Arthur--is a Celtic tradition hearkening back thousands of years, originating in ancient Gaul, Ireland, and Britain. Held on the shortest day and the longest night of the year, when the sun was at its southernmost point on the horizon, Winter Solstice festivities included music, dance, and bonfires, all meant to both honor and cast out the mysterious, fearsome dark.
And so we invite you, good folk of the foothills, to Fire & Ice, Placerville's very own Winter Solstice celebration, this 3rd Saturday, December 21st
. Bundle up in scarves, furs, and woolens, then wend your way to Main Street which will be alive and lit up with luminaria, drummers, storytellers, flautists, and fire-dancers. Imbibe wine, wassail, and cocoa! Praise winter! Summon snow!

LONDON STORYTELLER RAMSAY WOOD
SPINS TALES FOR FIRE & ICE
Kicking off Fire & Ice will be London storyteller and folklorist Ramsey Wood reading from his two volumes of fables: Kalila and Dimna: Fables of Friendship and Betrayal and Kalila and Dimna: Fables of Conflict and Intrigue.
Wood's books are essentially retellings -- in his words "cultural remixes" -- of the ancient animal fables of the Sanskrit Panchatantra, also known as the The Fables of Bidpai. Part of world literature for over 2,000 years, these stories have been passed down from culture to culture in many different formats, including Aesop's Fables, The Arabian Nights, and the Uncle Remus Stories.
After the reading, Wood will sell copies of Kalila and Dimna: Fables of Friendship and Betrayal (unsigned $10 and signed $15).
This reading is FREE and open to the public (21 and over); consider it our Winter Solstice present to you!
