Sierra Pacific Industries to clearcut at Union Valley Reservoir
This new timber harvest plan (THP) is called the Notned THP, and it will thin and clearcut right up to the lake and surrounding campgrounds and trails.
This will forever alter the forest experience for boaters, fisherman and campers, yet few people know about it do to the fact that SPI only has to notify adjacent landowners. Logging could start as soon as next spring, or earlier, if the plan is approved soon. They also will be clearcutting right up to an active osprey nest in unit 87, and potentially disturb bald eagles, golden eagles, goshawks and spotted owls. Furthermore, the South Fork of the American River provides drinking water for millions of Americans, yet SPI’s non-stop clearcutting practices continue to degrade and add silt to our water systems.
More clearcutting means more herbicide spraying, and also more flammable tree plantations.
