At Larry Lee Halverson’s sentencing hearing Dec. 9, everyone showed up but Judge Steven C. Bailey, causing the hearing to be postponed to Dec. 16. Bailey could not be reached for comment.
Halverson was convicted in October of gross negligence vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit-and-run causing injury. The convictions stem from a September 2011 incident in which Halverson struck and killed Patrick Purnell while the 51-year-old was crossing Ski Run Boulevard.
Halverson’s driver’s license was suspended for his eighth DUI at the time and he was found to be intoxicated.
Because of his prior DUI convictions, Halverson could face 15 years to life in prison under a “Courtney’s Law” provision for habitual offenders.
Halverson remains in custody. His defense attorney intends to file a motion requesting a new trial.
Several relatives of Purnell showed up at the sentencing hearing to testify last Monday. They told the court they were not happy about driving up to South Lake Tahoe on wintry roads only to find out the hearing would have to be postponed because there was no judge.
