CalRTA donates baskets for YANA
The You Are Not Alone program received festively decorated baskets from members of California Retired Teachers Association.
The baskets, filled with useful items such as paper towels, small soaps, batteries, snacks and teas were assembled by CalRTA members at the October meeting. Items for the baskets were donated by CalRTA members as well as Body Basics, a Placerville store on Main Street that donated gift-wrapped soaps for all 25 baskets.
“Being alone is one of the greatest fears older adults have as they grow older. The YANA program has been credited with saving the lives of many older adults who live alone and have fallen or become sick during the night,” explained Star Walker , coordinator of the El Dorado County program.
Telephone calls are made to check on participants on a daily basis. If there is a problem, family or friends will be notified or local law enforcement is called to check on the participantʼs well-being.
The volunteers who call the participants love their job and often develop a friendly relationship with the participant.
Providing the baskets to the YANA program from CalRTA was the brainchild of CalRTA Vice President Patsy Thompson.
“These older people who are alone are a part of our Placerville population thatʼs been neglected because most people arenʼt aware of their existence and needs. CalRTA wanted to donate these baskets to make this group in our community feel included,” Thompson said.
The baskets were delivered by STAR volunteers during the Thanksgiving holidays.
“I know that participants were thrilled with this gift,” said Thompson.
