William D. “Bill” Whiteneck, Jr.

William D. “Bill” Whiteneck, Jr., a Sacramento native and educator, passed away Saturday October 26th in Folsom after a long illness. Mr. Whiteneck was born in Sacramento in 1936 . He served the community and the state as a teacher, coach, school system administrator, and retired from his position as Chief Consultant to the State Senate Education Committee.
He was a 1954 graduate of C.K. McClatchy High School, and maintained a life-long connection to the school and its sports programs, and was honored in 2012 as an inductee into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame. He graduated from Sacramento State University, and upon graduation Bill returned to McClatchy as a teacher of American history and coach. He also worked as an administrator in the Sacramento City School District office before joining the State Department of Education and serving as the Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Finance. In 1983, Mr. Whiteneck moved from the Department of Education to serve as chief consultant to the State Senate Education Committee.
In retirement, Bill devoted time to helping establish the Fairfield Bocce Association, serving as president and being active in tournaments and leagues. He and his wife JoAnn also enjoyed traveling in Italy and other parts of Europe. Bill was an avid baseball fan and reader, especially of history and biographies. In the early 1980′s, he and JoAnn had built their own home and he continued to love a good building project around his property, including the construction of a personal bocce ball court for home use.
Bill will be remembered as a committed grandfather to his five grandchildren; he dedicated endless hours to their care and support, from the reading of stories to them when they were young to cheering them on at sporting events and listening patiently at concerts and school performances.
Mr. Whiteneck was married in 1957 to JoAnn Magnetti; they were married for 52 years, and she preceded him in death in 2009. He is survived by their children; son Daniel (Heidi) and daughters Wendy Carmickle (Don) and Karen Slabaugh (Tom) and five grandchildren; Tommy, Allie, Catherine, Connor, and Becky. He is also survived by his brother David and his wife Marge, and their children Doug, John, Cathy, as well as brother-in-law Bob Magnetti and his wife Bonnie.
Services will be held Wednesday, November 6, at 11am; Rockville Cemetery, 4219 Suisun Valley Road in Fairfield. A gathering will follow at the Slabaugh’s home in Davis; please contact them at ‘firstname.lastname@example.org’ for further information.
